This is the time of year when the dormant ones awaken, shed their dead skin and crawl back to life. In various traditions of tantra yoga, the very prana in our veins is described as moving via a kind of tremble. It is palpable inside as a subtle vibration, like wind sweeping across water or like the quaking leaves of the aspen tree. But it is not merely a biological tremor that passes along the nerves and crosses cell membranes. This trembling is an intimate, immediate resonance of the heart, a kind of spiritual throb born of awe, delight and humility. It is a resonance that brings us in touch with an unseen, powerful presence.
In yoga tantra, the heart vibration, known as spanda, is the most vital expression of the creative energy (shakti). For the Christian Gnostics, awakenings of the heart are similarly described as small flutterings or “stirrings”, palpable when moved inside by a spirit immeasurable. The tingle of sentiment calls us closer and closer to the beloved. When the tiny quiverings come, it is as if we are in the vibrational field of a living grace. It is then that the slightest motion of a thought or feeling, in consonance with the creative source, can be felt throughout the body as a shimmer. These heart shimmerings come about unplanned. Always available but mostly overlooked, the vibration is tangible when entering into silent stillness. Its manifestation is precious and when it arises inside of you, savor the delicate atmosphere of its presence. When the spiritual vibration of your heart awakens, be welcoming and invite its presence to soak right through you.
