The Mythology of Yoga

There are many rich and colorful myths related to yoga practice that reflect the trials and accomplishments of seekers on the path. Themes of devotion, asceticism, desire and karma run through each myth, expressing tension between the mundane and the sacred. In this series we explore wonderful and magical characters that appear in the Indian myths, characters that are both human and divine and directly relate to the path of yoga. A PDF of each story/myth will be made available prior to the class for you to read. In class, we delve into the drama within each myth and explore the teachings implicit to yoga.

Narada and the Great Flood

In this story we meet a wise saint who wishes to know the truth of this illusory world. When Lord Vishnu sends him on a simple mission to fetch a glass of water, he encounters a great flood. Powerful themes run through this myth relating to everyday life—being a householder, desire, karma, timelessness and the question of what is real.

Markendeya and the Great Ocean

In this story an ageless saint falls out of the mouth of a sleeping god. The god is practicing a kind of pranayama and when the saint falls, he has a direct encounter with his own boundless self in the form of a small child, an experience that is both overwhelming and enlightening.

Uma Daughter of the Mountain

In this story Uma, daughter of the mountain, is empowered by the gods to win the heart of Siva to save the world from destruction. Both wild and voluptuous, terrifying and devotional, her yoga transcends the limits of the body.
