Many people do not realize that the respiratory diaphragm is not the only horizontal structure in the body that follows a pump like motion to support the flow of breath and blood. In this immersion we practice the dynamic alignment and function of the body’s diaphragms, beginning with the plantar surface of the feet, up through the knees, pelvic floor, trunk, and cranium. We will utilize pumping, spiraling, expanding, and narrowing movements to bring greater buoyancy and resiliency to each diaphragm. We use SATYA, active and recuperative postures, and pranayama to bring greater coherence to the diaphragms. The beginning of class will include a half hour anatomical presentation on the ligaments, muscles, and connective tissues that form each of the eight diaphragms. This course will address conditions that impact the diaphragms such as plantar fasciitis, meniscus strain, pelvic floor dysfunction, reversed breathing, and temporal mandibular joint dysfunction.
