Embodying the Five Elements | August 2025 6-Class Online Series

In classical yoga, the body is thought to be made up of five primary elements—earth, water, fire, air and space. In this month of classes, we explore how the elements relate to the breath, the nerves, the bones and the skin. Each practice is devoted to embodying the energetic qualities of the elements.

Fri August 8th – Earth, Sky, and Space

In this class we begin with the well known Gayatri Mantra that celebrates the elements as the foundation for consciousness. We chant the Gayatri while embodying the elements. Through lifting, dropping extending and retracting movements we sense how all five elements combine to move awareness through the body.

Tues August 12th – Earth Bound

The earth element is all about ground, rootedness, weight, presence and a sense of belonging. In this class we bring the qualities of earth into the bones and connective tissues by practicing on the horizontal.

Fri August 15th – The Way of Water

Staying fluid is key to health, vitality and a feeling of joy in the body. This class is designed to help irrigate blood and lymph throughout the tissues of the body. We practice SATYA, supine and standing positions to increase circulation.

Fri August 22nd – The Fire Inside

The element of fire governs all electrical activity through the nerves. It has the quality of quickness, excitation, pulsation, tremble, suddenness and oscillation. In this class we trace the pathway of kinetic flow through the tissues as the fire element.

Tues August 26th – Airborne

Within the five elements, air governs sensation in the nervous system. Prana and the air element move in currents, gusts, brushing movements and ripples. In this class we work with the air (wind) element by addressing the flow of sensation in the connective tissues, organs and skin.

Fri August 29th – Space

The element of space pervades the entire body and is the foundation for all the other elements. Space has the quality of lightness, serenity, expansion, boundlessness and openness. In this class we bring a sense of spaciousness to the entire body.

  • Have your props handy! We recommend two blocks, blankets, a thick bolster, an 8’ or 10’ belt/strap, and a backless chair (modifications will be given if you do not have a chair). We recommend yogaoutlet.com and Manduka for props; backless chairs can be found on Amazon and Etsy.
  • Please note that all classes are in Mountain Time.
  • Can’t join us at 10am MT because of your schedule or time zone? We’ve got you covered! Reserve your seat and all video recordings will be uploaded to your course curriculum to watch when you can, available to stream for 30 days.
