Turning with the Season, Turning Toward the Practice
This is the time of year to shed anything you don’t need for your journey and travel light. The herons know this. I saw one today devouring minnows along the shore preparing for their long southward migration. The golden rod knows this too, burning a last blast of brilliant yellow before turning to seed. And the rose hips and blackberries— all wrinkled and shriveled— are prepared to fall. They have an end of the season taste —a bit sweet but mostly bitter. I found one on the brambly path behind the house. Day by day the sun goes down faster and more final like a heavy theatre curtain at the end of a show.
In this season of shedding what can you let fall away? Can you cast off all lingering angst and burden and let your old fears wither away? Like clouds pushed swiftly by the autumn winds this is the time to clear out negativity and doubt. Time to let fall anything that keeps you from being at peace and in place on firm ground.
