Follow Your Bliss

The best thing to do through a lifetime is to follow your heart and trust where it takes you. As Joseph Campbell famously said, you have to follow your bliss. You have to listen to your inner most longing and learn to live your passion. The key is to come to discover it for yourself and like a lover knows his or her beloved, to feel it deeply. There are many ways to inhabit the body of bliss. You might happen upon it spontaneously in a moment of surprise. Or, you might come to it through years of practice, years of trial and error. Or you might come to it by being with others who live in the field of bliss, either human or animal. Whether they come to you in the flesh, or in dreams, or in your imagination makes no difference.

In the context of the oldest yoga teachings harkening back to scripture written down by the ancient seers, to follow your bliss is to abide in your fundamental nature. Your true nature is open, clear and unconfined. Below all thoughts, ideas, hopes and fears, is a space of radiance. It is never something to be acquired and owned but something that is always with you. You can’t lose it and you can’t possess it. You must only find a way to belong to it through and through.
