With all the craze going on in the world today, you have to find small ways each day to laugh, or at least chuckle, at the absurdity of things. Start with the goings-on in your own home, observing not only the peculiar habits of the people you love but your own daily slip-ups, blunders and guffaws. Because each of us is short-sighted, we bumble through the day, losing track of things and getting things backward. You have to laugh at your own foolery and small-brained self. And how national affairs can look equally foolish and ridiculous! Just this week the President, full of hot air and hubris, took it upon himself to change the name of my home state from New Mexico to New America. And who doesn’t see the absurdity in fighting another war in the Middle East?
Know that the world of people, places and things are mercurial. As it is said in the Diamond Sutra, all things are like a candle in a strong wind, like a phantom or a mirage. So each day see into the preposterous edge of the world. Each day, find humor in yourself and the world around you and share a laugh and a tear with a friend. The world is full of divine comedy. So live out your days attending to matters while seeing into all the funny ways that our collective minds make things up out of thin air.
