The best things in life you cannot make happen. The best we can do is get ourselves into a place of openness where everything becomes possible. You never quite know where that place is exactly, so you have to coax yourself to a place of open receptivity. And be patient. The great American painter Robert Henri once said, “The object isn’t to make art, it’s to be in that wonderful state which makes art inevitable”. The question is how do you get to that “wonderful state”? It means opening to a grace that flows silent and unseen through all things.
Try this. Each morning start with an open canvas. On your walk or in your meditation, open all the windows and doors in your heart and mind. Each day holds a new potential and as your day progresses, trust that it will be revealed. Never believe that it is not possible, for doubt and denial are robbers that steal from your power and brilliance. Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, once said that until the very last moment, anything is possible. So you have to believe in the law of possibility. The law of karma works in mysterious ways. Nothing is set in stone. Nothing is predetermined. That is why it is said that we live in an auspicious realm, always within the bounds of possibility.
So, each morning enter that wonderful state which lies right at the very source of all your creative power and energy. Spend 10-20 minutes in that state, allowing it to soak into you like rain onto dry soil. The “wonderful state” is the liminal place between the known and the unknown. That state is always within reach. In fact if you look long and close enough, you may realize you are living in that marvelous, productive, magical, favorable state all the time.
