Today in North America there is a magnificent convergence of forces. This is the day where everything comes to a point. First off, the sun reaches its zenith, having climbed to the height of the Summer Solstice. This magnificent solar summit is worth rejoicing by staying up late and holding vigil for the long, long light in your own heart. Also of real consequence, this is the day to celebrate the father. On this day set aside one half hour to honor the loving father, the one who is kindhearted, steadfast and noble. Celebrate the father that guides his child through times of difficulty, who can be playful, caring, and full of humor. And in yoga, as the sun hits the high point in the sky on Summer Solstice, we channel the benevolent father down through the mid-line of our spine.
Not only is it Summer Solstice and Father’s Day, but the event that draws people together from across the globe– from Ivory Coast to Iran, from Bosnia to Brazil– takes place at this very moment. The greatest convergence of hearts, nation colors, hopes and dreams is happening now…. the World Cup of football. It is the only sport where no one can use their hands! (except for the goalie) and for this reason, it is a passionate game being all about the feet, legs, quads, hamstrings and heart.
Like the earth’s rotation aligned today perfectly with the sun, the World Cup is the pinnacle of the global community. More so than politics, religion, economy or race, football brings people together. For many, this game is equal to God. It is the sport that rules the world. So on this apex day of summer, celebrate this transcendent planetary convergence right through your spine with one word, one mantra, GOOOOAAAALLLL!
