In yoga, the lotus is the quintessential symbol for transformation. Along the scaffolding of the spine the ancients imagined the power centers to be like a garland of water borne flowers. And now the body politic is being reimagined by Kamala (the Lotus!) Harris. Her sudden blossoming sure brings hope and promise– promise of an empathetic presence, a strong heart and real sagacity. Along the axis of the chakras, each lotus begins as a tight bud and over time as the auspicious winds of prana travel through the gut, throat, heart and brain, the petals of the flowers open. Kamala represents such a bloom. A woman president would bring fresh breeze to the lungs and heart of the nation. And how we need fresh air! And it’s high time for a woman to be commander-in-chief, one who embodies wisdom, humanity and caring strength. Like the thousands of yoginis in America blessed with the time and opportunity to take care of their body/minds, it is time for every women to have the right to control her body.
This is an auspicious hour, when maybe, just maybe, love will bloom instead of animosity and hate. Gandhi once said, “power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent than the one derived on fear of punishment.” This love can only be born from discipline, right effort and tireless devotion. You must know the old adage that speaks to maturation on the yoga path “no mud, no lotus.” Goodness knows we have been through the mud! Now is the time for the lotus flower to burst forth and for justice and decency to reign.
