Today we honor the mother, the one who gives of herself selflessly to nourish the world. We celebrate your strength and commitment to the long process of ushering a vulnerable being into the world, a helpless being, that is at first but a bundle of need. You are the progenitor of us all, swaddling the world in your care. We celebrate mothers to be, mothers long gone, present mothers and those who mother in spirit. While we honor you who give birth via cell division, gastrulation, and genetic coding, we too honor the Great Mother who generates care and compassion for all beings.
This metta mother, this mother of mercy, does not discriminate according to gender, skin tone or belief. This is the mother who transcends all bias and hate and goes right to loving kindness, like Kuanyin with a 1,000 eyes bearing witness to the suffering of the world. This is the mother who with enduring strength and self-sacrifice loves unconditionally. May every mother today be nourished so that in turn she may nourish life.
