In yoga, the deepest pulse of life in the body is known as the kundalini, a current of neurological force that flows through the central channel of the spine. The language of yoga describing the force (shakti) of the central nervous system bears close resemblance to contemporary research on the brain, brain stem and spinal cord. This course explores how yoga practice including asana, pranayama, yoga nidra and meditative states impact the vast neuronal assemblies in the brain. Through practice and study, we will see how light, image, vibration, loving awareness and finely articulated movement help rewire and heal the brain. We practice the SATYA movements (Sensory Awareness Training for Yoga) in order to generate more expansive and finely tuned brain maps. We will compare and contrast descriptions of the cranial chakras with lower (reptilian), middle (mammalian) and upper (neo-cortex) brains.

Saturday – Sunday, April 27 – 28, 2019
For thousands of years, the body in yoga has been thought to be made up of five primary elements. In this in-depth study, you will learn the anatomical, energetic and psychological components of each element in the body while practicing postures, breathing techniques, meditations and interior seals to direct the flow of energy. Tias teaches through imagery, anatomical drawings, poetry and metaphor to illustrate the connection between the five elements and the subtle body in yoga.

Saturday morning: 10:30am – 1:30pm
EARTH AND WATER: The Pelvis and Sacrum
The root of the spine with the pelvic floor is the ground for all growth in yoga. This immersion explores mula bandha, the tailbone, the perineum and the fluidity and equilibrium of the sacrum and sacral-iliac joints.. Our aim is to create flexibility in the lateral hip rotators and stability and lightness at the base of the spine. We do SATYA movements and asana to access the lower psoas and abdomen and to begin to gain support from uddiyana bandha.
Saturday afternoon: 2:30pm – 5:30pm
FIRE: Solar Plexus
The third chakra is a common place for constriction due to stress and emotional holding. This immersion investigates the adrenal glands, lumbar spine and psoas muscle. We emphasis twists and supported backbends in the asana practice and pranayama with a focus on inhalation.
Sunday morning: 10:30am – 1:30pm
AIR: Chest Cavity
Prana flows through the lungs and heart, upper ribs and sternal region. This immersion explores the pulse of the prana in the chest emphasizing techniques for the shoulder joint, the scapulae and the collar bones. In asana, we do backbends and in pranayama we practice Viloma I and II.
Sunday afternoon: 2:30pm – 5:30pm
SPACE: Neck/Palate/Ear
When training the subtle body, it is essential to release pressure around the sensory organs of the eyes, ears, tongue and facial skin. In this immersion, we practice asana, mudras and pranayama for the jaw, throat and cranial bones. In pranayama practice, we activate the “bumble bee breath” while bringing ease to the cranial rhythms.
