200-Hour Prajna Yoga Teacher Training

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is the difference between a 200, 300, and 500-Hour Yoga Teacher Training?

The 200-Hour Prajna Yoga Teacher Training Program is a fundamental training for new yoga teachers. No previous teaching experience or training is needed to apply. A student who has completed our 200-Hour Program can apply to be a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT200) with Yoga Alliance.

Once you’ve completed the foundational 200-Hour Prajna Yoga Teacher Training, many teachers decide to continue their education and participate in our 300-Hour Prajna Yoga Teacher Training Program as a way to further solidify their skills, knowledge, and style as a yoga instructor. This 300-Hour Program is a thorough professional training for becoming a highly skilled yoga teacher. It rounds out and solidifies a teacher’s complete education. Our 300-Hour Program is a “bridge program” for students who have completed a 200-Hour Program with another studio. A student who has completed our 300-Hour Program can apply to be a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT500) with Yoga Alliance.

Our 500-Hour Program is for students who have completed the Prajna Yoga 200-Hour Program and want to become a 500-Hour Prajna Yoga Teacher. This includes completing the Prajna Yoga 200-Hour and 300-Hour Programs for a total of 500-Hours of training through Prajna Yoga. These students can also apply to be a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT500) with Yoga Alliance.

What qualifications must I meet to be accepted into the 200-Hour Program?

We strongly recommend that applicants have at least one year of consistent asana practice and are relatively comfortable practicing urdhva dhanurasana.  If you are brand new to yoga, this would not be an appropriate program to participate in. You will not benefit from learning yoga basics while simultaneously learning how to teach. However, if you have a regular yoga practice, you may be more ready than you think. Keep in mind this program is not only for aspiring teachers, but people who want to deepen their practice.

To qualify for our Teacher Training Program, you must complete an application. Each application will be individually reviewed for past experience and background in yogic studies. If there are specific health concerns, they will be reviewed and considered on an individual basis.

How do I apply to the Prajna Yoga Teacher Training Program and when will I know if I have been accepted?

You’ll need to fill out an application for the program; once the Prajna office receives your application we will make a determination regarding your acceptance. You will then be notified by email about the status of your acceptance. Once you have been accepted into the program you may register for one or more of the sessions.

What is included in the price of training?

Included in the price of registration is access to the 3 Modules of our 200-Hour Program — Module 1: From the Ground Up, Module 2: The Fluid Body, and Module 3: The Subtle Body. Students who want to participate in the full training must complete all 3 modules. Students can also drop-in to individual modules.

Also included is indefinite and downloadable access to all course materials. This includes PDFs of the course manual, video recordings of live sessions of training, and audio and video recordings of lectures and guided meditations. You can return to the content for years to come to refresh your memory and recharge your practice and teaching.

Students also receive 30 days of access to many of Tias’s weekly live classes during training, our Prajna Live classes.

What is the format of the training and what are the modules?

This online program includes 3 Modules run live via Zoom (schedule details TBD). Students are encouraged to join live, but each live class will be recorded and made accessible indefinitely. Students who want to participate in the full training must complete all 3 modules to receive their 200-Hour Certificate. Students can also drop-in to individual modules.

Module 1: From the Ground Up

In this module we begin by establishing the foundation of the body-mind connection. In our investigation of the body, we begin with the amazing, ever-changing fluid matrix of the fascia and how it provides support for all structures of the body. We build the temple of the body from the ground up. We study the architecture of the feet, ankles, knees, hips, and lower spine. Through floor work, standing poses, and prop work, we open the pathway of energy through the legs.

Module 2: The Fluid Body

Because we are 80% water, we emphasize fluidity in both body and mind. In the study of the fluid nature of consciousness we include the power of myth, story, and dreams. In the body we cover the fluid dynamics of the spine, the kidneys, the lungs, and circulation of blood. In practice we mobilize and stabilize the lower back while strengthening the core musculature of the abdomen.

Module 3: The Subtle Body

Connection to your subtle body is a time honored process. You can’t push the river and it comes through settling, gaining insight, and opening to grace. In this module we gain postural balance and fine articulation of the upper spine, neck, and cranium. In the teaching practicum, we help students find the language to articulate their mind-body connection through sensitivity and mindful precision.

Is there a required reading list, and are books included in the price of the training?

Tias has a recommended reading list that will be given to students upon acceptance into the Program. These books and materials are not included in the price of the training and students will have to acquire these materials on their own. They are available from bookstores or from on-line booksellers, or you can borrow them from libraries. A PDF of our student manual is included in the price of the training.

Will I be qualified to teach yoga once I complete the 200-Hour Prajna Yoga Teacher Training Program?

With the successful completion of all the requirements of the program, you will receive a Prajna Yoga 200-Hour Certificate evidencing your completion of the training program. You may then register with Yoga Alliance at the RYT200 level (Registered Yoga Teacher 200). Many yoga studios ask their teachers to register with Yoga Alliance; Yoga Alliance registration is not a legal or an absolute requirement for teaching yoga, but being a Yoga Alliance registered teacher adds credibility to your teaching credentials. Yoga Alliance 200-Hour Registration offers the added benefit of a listing on their website and the recognition of a national certifying body.

Graduates of our 200-Hour Program usually begin teaching in small studios, gyms, etc, or with private clientele including friends and family.

Prajna Yoga is by far one of the best yoga programs out there. The holistic and humble combination of asana, meditation, chanting, and dharma are great tools for both self-practice and teaching. A very transformative program! Thank you Tias and Surya!
